Gambling is entertainment that costs money. It is not a way to earn, and it is not a way out of a financial problem. This page sets out the tools that limit it and the free help available in the United Kingdom if it has stopped being a choice.

The tools every licensed operator must give you

These sit in your account settings at any operator licensed by the Gambling Commission. They are free, they apply immediately, and they do not require you to explain yourself to anybody.

• Deposit limits. A cap per day, week or month. Tightening one takes effect at once; loosening one is deliberately delayed by a cooling-off period.
• Loss limits. A ceiling on net losses over a period, which stops play when it is reached.
• Session time limits. A cap on how long a single session can run.
• Reality checks. An on-screen interruption at an interval you choose, telling you how long you have been playing. Sessions run longer than people estimate, and this is the cheapest correction available.
• Time-out. Locks the account for a day, a week, a month or six weeks. The right tool for a break rather than an ending.
• Self-exclusion. A minimum of six months at that operator, during which the account is closed and marketing must stop.

Set a deposit limit before your first session rather than after a bad one, and set it at a figure you would be entirely relaxed about losing.

GAMSTOP is the free national self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. A single registration blocks you from every operator holding a Gambling Commission licence for a period you choose — six months, one year or five years — and every licensed operator is required to be integrated with it.

Facts that undercut the common myths

Slots use random number generators that are independently tested. Every spin is determined at the moment you press the button and is unaffected by previous spins, by how long you have played, or by the size of your balance.
